Tmps and Omps and Vsps and Vmps and Osps, Oh, My!

Few things are more annoying to me than to witness people who supposedly have Biology or Chemistry or Pre-Med undergraduate degrees and don’t know “structure predicts function,” especially when the language of chemistry is structure-talk. You know like “1,2- dimethyl Oreo” would be an Oreo with 2 methyl groups on it in the 1 and 2 positions.

Or that we have whole classes of molecules like alkanes and alchohols and akaloids and ketones and esters and fatty acids and amino acids and innumerable inorganic salts and crystals yet none of these allegedly educated people understand that those “1,2 this or that” names mean a physical image and that that physical image predicts a function.   Structure predicts Function.   More or for instance: if something is an ACID, you want to know what that is, and of course WOULD know how that acid behaves, right? Same thing with bases or the likes of Drano. You want to know what that stuff is on account of what it DOES, say to human flesh. ALWAYS.

I always have better luck with concept this from people with a 4 or 5 year pharmacy background. They know their picture-talking.   But ALL these people – doctors and “microbiologists” or whatever they’re calling themselves should be trained to think in the picture-talking of chemistry and YOU should be thoroughly pissed off when you find they don’t.

 

There I was, just chugging along, exploring Facebook-land looking for intelligent posts and posts from intelligent people who understand the Lyme crymes (see truthcures.org/charge-sheets) when I stumbled upon a silly nonsense argument from some self-alleged Lyme expert in Australia who insists that what is going on in Australia is unique from American or European (or even African) tick bite or LYMErix-sepsis. As if.

As if the Relapsing Fever Borrelia dont shed fungal endotoxins.

The only difference between the alleged “Lyme group” and the Relapsing Fever group is that the Lymes – and I cant believe I just wrote that word in all seriousness – have an added antigen (OspA-B) that is a ligand for chitinous tissue or knees or the hard bodies of hard-bodied ticks.  That is supposedly new.

Whoever does not know this, should not be talking about Lyme or spirochetal diseases at all. It means they have never studied the basic biology of Spirochaeta, formally, or even know anything about Taxonomy, Evolution and Genetics, because these course are all required in like pre-med basic Bio undergraduate training.  You have to take those courses.  At least, we all did, back in the day when shit was serious and people were expected to be responsible for content.

The spirochetes in the soft-bodied Ornithoros ticks or the hard bodied Ixodes ticks are called Borreliae.  That’s just a thing.  Spirochetes in bugs are called Borreliae.  Spirochetes in the guts of pigs are called Brachyspira, and then there is Leptospira (other livestock, can be inhaled by humans from dried animal urine), the Treponemes (in saliva and genital mucosa) and the Cristispira or the free-living spirochetes, basically and so on.

This one “microbiologist” I-think-rich-person with an Irish or Scottish last name and apparently, an Aboriginal first name (we’ll call her MM), tried to tell me spirochetes in the Southern Hemisphere do not follow the same rules of physics or physiochemistry that we all life forms do in the Old North.

And by the way I have nothing against Irish- or Scottish- Anglos with criminal ancestors who were banished to life in that Great Useless Desert in the Southern Hemisphere.  My criminal ancestors committed their crimes here in the North after all.  Long story.  And somewhat famous.  But none of us gets credit or blame for what our ancestors did, do we.

She tried to tell me basically that the Osps are not the same as the Vsps or the Vmps or the Omps or the Tmps of the other borrelia and that therefore do not cause disease in the same way.  That was frustrating, considering it took 5 years to discover (from 1999 to early 2005) exactly what OspA was, knowing it was causing the same “multi-system and NOT arthritis outcome as the Lyme- or the Relapsing Fever-chetes.”  So, what’s a Vmp or a Vsp or the primary antigenic outer surface antigens that are ligands for host tissues?

And the OspC type of antigens which are conserved across Borreliae species appear to be a ligand for something on red blood cells are called Vmps or Vsps for Variable Membrane Protein or Variable Small Membrane Proteins:

Relapsing fever and Lyme disease spirochetes of the genus Borrelia display at their surfaces abundant lipoproteins: Vmp proteins in Borrelia hermsii and Osp proteins in Borrelia burgdorferi. Vmp and Osp proteins largely determine serotype specificity, and neutralizing antibodies of infected or immunized animals are directed at them. For the present study, we examined B. hermsii serotype 33, which is unique among strain HS1 serotypes in the low frequency of switches to other serotypes during infections and in vitro cultivation. Failing to clone the complete vmp33 gene, we accomplished its further characterization by (i) determining three partial amino acid sequences, (ii) designing oligonucleotide primers based on these amino acid sequences, (iii) cloning and sequencing the central portion of vmp33, and (iv) using outwardly directed primers and the inverse PCR to clone the 5′ and 3′ ends of the gene and flanking regions. The transcriptional start site was identified by primer extension analysis. Vmp33 was a polypeptide of 211 amino acids; the three partial amino acid sequences were identified in the open reading frame. Vmp33 was found to be more similar to other 20-kDa Vmp proteins of B. hermsii and to OspC proteins of B. burgdorferi than it was to 35- to 39-kDa Vmp proteins of the same strain. Moreover, OspC proteins were more similar to Vmp33 than they were to OspA, -B, or -D proteins of B. burgdorferi. These sequence similarities were consistent with Western blot (immunoblot) findings of cross-reactions between Vmp33 and OspC with anti-Vmp33 and anti-OspC sera. The promoter for the expressed vmp33 gene was found to be different from the expression site for other active vmp genes characterized to date. These results indicate that Vmp33 and other small Vmp’s belong with OspC to a genus-wide family of 20-kDa proteins and that expression of these proteins may be coordinated with expression of other Vmp and Osp proteins in Borrelia spp.

These Osps or Vmps or Vmps or Tmps or whatever they are called, if they are fungal-ish and if spirochetes cause disease by shedding fungal antigens, and if you can find out on your own that just about all spirochetes cause disease in the same way, regardless of what their names are or what their TLR2/1 agonist surface antigens are called – and especially as regards BORRELIAE (that means the whole genus, when you put an E on the end)-, then that is how they cause disease, regardless of their hemisphere.

 

Somehow in Australia, people don’t know this basic biology of spirochetes and can think they can run the “Lyme” show down there without knowing a damned thing.
